Labour costs explained

• The main cost in developing a website for a client is establishing the look-and-feel. This can take several hours, or even days in the case of complex sites. The time to develop can be drastically reduced if existing graphics, artwork and pre-written material are available

• Websites with shopping carts are more complex to develop and require you to maintain a stock-control system to ensure it is up to date

• “Fancy” features such as slideshows require additional development time which must be offset against the actual value they add to the site

• Please note that I do not charge for an initial one hour consultation - provided that it is within the Hamilton or Cambridge townships

Establishing the look-and-feel

• “Plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery”. By this I mean it is helpful if the client can list specific websites that they do or do not like to give an idea of how they would like it to look. Hand-drawn doodles of the desired layout help a lot

• It is important to use a consistent look across the site so all of the graphics need to be of the same style. Find a mixed-bag of images on Google just doesn't cut it

• Colour is important and these should work in harmony with each other and any graphics

The process

• Meet with client to identify requirement and devise some layouts, colour schemes, etc.

• Client provides all material, text, graphics, etc.

• Setup domain name and hosting

• “Prototype” some layouts for client

• Client specifies any changes to layout

• “Final draft” of layout is signed off by client or developed further

• Chosen style of website is populated with “real” content

• Client signs-off on finished website and is billed
